MP responds to fuel poverty forecast

Responding to forecasts that the numbers of people in the region facing fuel poverty are likely to increase this winter as a result of higher fuel charges, local MP David Heath said:
“The number of people who have difficulties keeping themselves warm has risen massively over the last five years. That’s why I tried to get action a couple of years ago when I introduced my Fuel Poverty bill which was blocked by the last government.
“There are three things which need to be done. First, we need additional help for those least well off through the fuel tariff, which we are introducing on a statutory basis at the moment. Secondly, we need to address the problem at source by better insulation of homes, including the older houses typical of areas like this which are that much more difficult to treat. That’s what the government’s Big Green Deal is all about. Thirdly, we need to make the pricing of energy more transparent and make it easier for people to switch suppliers with confidence. The so-called big six suppliers are often not offering the best deal for consumers.”
“Too often suppliers put their prices up when world prices go up, but are much more reluctant to bring them down when the reverse is the case. And let’s not forget those I rural areas depending on fuel oil or LPG, who are facing massive increases at the moment. As I requested, that issue has now been passed to the regulatory authorities, and I’m looking forward to their response.”
David Heath MP submitted a private members bill on Fuel Poverty to parliament in March 2009, which was unfortunately defeated. Details can be found here:
